Integrating technology into the agriculture sector

Food security is set to be one of the most crucial challenges of the next decades.

By 2050, the global population is predicted to reach 9.8 billion people, and with our current food production there won’t be enough to feed this much larger population. There is a need to rethink traditional methods of farming and managing livestock, and the integration of technology provides real opportunity.

Digital technology is increasingly being used in agriculture and offers a wide range of potential solutions to some of the most challenging industry issues of productivity, sustainability, tracking and monitoring.

In an effort to further integrate new technologies into the agricultural sector, MLA has supported the launch of a new digital platform, which helps Australian farmers search, sort and compare hundreds of available AgTech products. The AgTech Finder platform (agtechfinder.com) acts as an independent site featuring more than 230 products from ag-tech companies of all sizes, including established and emerging solution providers from throughout Australia and overseas.

This type of platform is also set to be replicated throughout the different segments of the agricultural industry, aiming to help farmers and other industry stakeholders find the information they need to help drive the uptake of important new efficiency-driving innovations.

Ultimately, MLA’s strategic investment in agtech mirrors the EU’s approach to digitised agriculture – it is all about improving the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector, while simplifying the daily work of farmers.
